Chapter 170
Dominic Reeves thought, Lucien has fame, status, power, and wealth—he could have any woman he desires. Besides, my mother introduced him to me, so he must be her friend. Why would he be interested in Vanessa?
With that realization, Dominic relaxed. He raised his glass with a smile and said, "Thank you!" before downing his wine in one go.
Lucien's lips curved subtly, his gaze hidden behind the glint of his gold-framed glasses. "By the way, Mr. Reeves, how long do you plan to stay in the country? I’m curious if you’re considering expanding your business here."
Now that Dominic had dismissed his suspicions, he shifted the conversation, eager to secure Lucien’s expertise for himself. "I haven’t decided yet," Lucien replied, swirling the wine in his glass before taking a slow sip.
Dominic deliberately misinterpreted his answer. "If that’s the case, does that mean you’re open to opportunities? If so, I’d love to know which local companies interest you. Would you consider joining DR Holdings?"
Lucien smirked, tilting his head slightly. Does he seriously think his company is worth my time? Where does he get the confidence to even ask?
With an amused lift of his brow, Lucien countered, "Oh? And what kind of salary are we discussing, Mr. Reeves?"
Dominic wasn’t oblivious to the mockery in Lucien’s tone, but he didn’t let it faze him. It was true—DR Holdings couldn’t compete with the financial might of industry giants.
Yet, sitting across from Lucien Dubois, Dominic saw an opportunity. "Admittedly, our resources are limited. We may not be able to match the offers from larger firms."
Lucien swirled his wine lazily, his attention drifting. "Then why should I choose your company?"
Dominic leaned forward, his voice persuasive. "Because while the pay may not be the highest, we offer something others can’t. Genevieve introduced you, and you’ve already helped us. That makes you a friend. Name anything you want, and we’ll make it happen."
He continued, "You’ll answer to no one but me. Complete creative freedom, no corporate red tape. No other company can promise you that."
Pausing for effect, Dominic added confidently, "At your level, it’s not just about money—it’s about influence and legacy. I can give you both."
He spoke with conviction, certain his offer was irresistible. After all, who else could guarantee Lucien total autonomy?
Lucien set his glass down with deliberate precision, his expression unreadable. "You’re mistaken."
Dominic frowned.
"First," Lucien said, his tone sharp, "money is important. I became a perfumer to earn it. Are you telling me you built your company out of charity?"
Dominic’s smile faltered.
"Second," Lucien continued, "every company I’ve worked with has given me creative control. You’re not offering anything special."
His words hung in the air, stripping Dominic’s confidence bare.
