Chapter 160
Before Vanessa could complete her sentence, Lucien abruptly released his hold on her.
His expression darkened visibly.
This reaction made Vanessa's anxiety spike. "I'm sorry, Lucien. I just—"
He turned sharply, his glasses glinting dangerously in the dim light. His icy stare sent shivers down her spine. "Vanessa, darling," he drawled, lighting a cigarette with deliberate slowness. "I made it clear—you play by my rules if you want my help." He exhaled a cloud of smoke directly into her face. "You're being rather disappointing tonight."
The acrid smoke made her cough violently, but she clenched her fists. She'd sacrificed too much already to back out now.
Forcing a sweet smile, she reached for his arm. "Don't be angry, mon cher. It was just... sudden." She lowered her lashes demurely. "But you're right—we should seize the moment. Whatever you desire, I'm yours."
"That's my girl." He traced her jawline with nicotine-stained fingers before crushing his lips against hers. The taste of tobacco and dominance made her stomach churn, but she endured it silently. This was the price of her ambitions.
When they reached The Chateau Royale, Vanessa slumped against the leather seat, every muscle screaming in protest. No matter how many times she told herself this was temporary, her body kept score of the violations.
"Ma chérie, we've arrived," Lucien purred, his public persona of charm sliding back into place like a well-worn mask.
She forced herself upright. "I'll... go to my room first."
His hand shot out to stop her. "Our room, darling."
Though repulsed, she batted her eyelashes. "Lucien, please—I need to rest."
"Of course." He kissed her cheek with exaggerated tenderness before releasing her.
Vanessa practically staggered into the grand lobby, only to freeze mid-step.
Dominic stood silhouetted against the marble columns, his stormy gaze pinning her in place. The air crackled with unspoken fury.
Her blood turned to ice. "D-Dominic?"
