Chapter 136

"Does it really matter if it's a man or a woman?" Alexander Kensington asked, his voice laced with possessiveness.

Evelyn Carter sighed. Arguing with a jealous husband was like talking to a brick wall.

"Fine," she conceded, cupping his face in her hands. "I'm flattered that Mr. Kensington is jealous over me. But," she paused, her tone softening, "we're still civilized people. We should be considerate of others. I need to check on Victoria. Behave for me, okay?"

She pressed a quick kiss to his lips before pulling away to make the call. Alexander couldn't argue—she had a point, and she’d even stroked his ego. Resisting her was impossible.

"Victoria? Are you there yet? How’s everything?" Evelyn asked, unsure if the client was real or just another one of Alexander’s schemes. Either way, she needed to make sure her friend was safe.

"Call me if you need anything," Evelyn repeated.

At the same time, Alexander’s hand slid around her waist, squeezing playfully.

Evelyn shot him a glare but kept her voice steady. "It’s nothing. Just bumped my leg against the table. I’m fine! Don’t worry about me. Get back to the hotel safely, and I’ll see you later. Bye!"

The moment she hung up, she turned on him. "Stop that!"

"What did I do?" He feigned innocence, eyes wide. "I didn’t say a word."

"No, but your hands were very busy," she retorted, mimicking his earlier action by reaching for his waist and giving it a firm pinch.

Alexander didn’t even flinch.

Evelyn blinked in disbelief. Was he made of stone?

"See?" He smirked. "I didn’t hit my leg on anything. So, the problem is yours, not mine."

She scowled. The audacity of him throwing her own words back at her!

She tried to stand, but his arms tightened around her, flipping her onto the sofa until he hovered above her. His gaze burned into hers, intense and unwavering.

Evelyn’s breath hitched. Even this close, he was flawless. Life was so unfair.

"Impressed?" He grinned, tracing her jawline. "Like what you see?"

"Mm. You look delicious," she admitted, pulling him closer.

The moment she’d laid eyes on him again, the longing had only grown. All she wanted was to hold him and never let go.

Alexander buried his face in her neck, murmuring her name like a prayer.

Evelyn’s mind spun, consumed by nothing but him.
