Chapter 135
Being wrapped in Alexander Kensington's arms was pure bliss. Evelyn Carter tilted her head up to meet his gaze. "When did you arrive?"
Alexander pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. "Guess."
Now he wants to play games. Evelyn smirked before answering, "You left the same day we did, didn't you? Even though we got here first, you weren’t far behind."
Alexander chuckled, brushing his lips against her cheek. "Clever girl."
"That’s because I tried calling you, but your phone was off. You never turn it off—not even during meetings. I figured you must’ve been on a flight." As Evelyn pieced together the details, she realized the truth. Still, it never crossed her mind that Alexander had rushed here just to see her.
"Impressive. Should I reward you for being so sharp?" His smirk was playful, but the warmth in his eyes made her heart flutter. He scooped her up effortlessly, settling onto the sofa with her nestled in his lap. The weight of her against him felt right, as if she belonged there.
Evelyn looped her arms around his neck to steady herself. "So, you were the one who arranged the first-class flight and the Rolls-Royce?"
"Mhm." He didn’t deny it.
"And you were the client Victoria mentioned on the phone?" Her voice rose slightly in accusation.
"Guilty."
"You shouldn’t abuse your power like that!" She swatted his chest lightly. "It’s the middle of the night. You can’t just send Victoria out to meet a client this late. What if something happened to her?"
It was clear this had all been Alexander’s doing. The timing was too perfect—Victoria conveniently absent, him conveniently here. But Evelyn couldn’t shake the guilt that their little game might have put someone else in an uncomfortable or even dangerous situation.
"You’ve grown quite attached to her, haven’t you?" There was an edge to his voice, something almost possessive.
"She’s my colleague and my friend. Of course I care about her." Evelyn frowned. "I should call her and tell her to come back now."
Alexander caught her wrist before she could reach for her phone. "Really? If she comes back, I’ll have to leave. Unless you’ve changed your mind about keeping us a secret?"
Evelyn hesitated, torn. The thought of sending him away so soon was unbearable. But leaving Victoria out there alone at this hour didn’t sit right with her either.
"I know, but we can’t keep her out all night," she relented, pulling her hand back. "We have all day tomorrow—just sightseeing. After that, we’ll have plenty of time together."
"So Victoria is more important than me?" His tone was teasing, but there was a flicker of something darker beneath it.
Evelyn arched a brow. "Are you jealous?"
"Isn’t it obvious?" He didn’t even try to hide it. If anything, he looked smug, as if his possessiveness was something to be proud of.
"Victoria is a woman. Why would you be jealous of a friend?" She couldn’t help but laugh.
Alexander’s grip tightened slightly, his expression unreadable. "Because when it comes to you, Evelyn, I don’t like sharing."
