Chapter 111

Vanessa couldn't suppress her excitement as she settled into the plush first-class seat, her fingers tracing the buttery leather armrests. The difference between standard and first-class was like night and day. She stole a glance at Lucien beside her, her lips curving into a satisfied smile. This luxury was all his doing.

Dominic had never once upgraded their tickets during all their business trips together. "We must be frugal," he'd always say, adjusting his tie while citing company expenses. Vanessa had swallowed her disappointment, believing his promises that their sacrifices would pay off someday. Yet here she was, sipping champagne before takeoff, while Dominic remained a distant memory.

"Mr. Dubois," she purred, leaning slightly toward him, "I'm truly grateful for this opportunity to accompany you to the sampling event. Do guide me if I make any missteps."

Lucien's gaze traveled slowly from her designer heels to her carefully styled hair. "Intelligent women like you learn quickly," he murmured, his French accent thickening.

"You really think so?" Vanessa's hand fluttered to her hair, her pulse quickening at his attention. "Then I'll rely on your expert guidance."

His fingers brushed against hers as he reached for his drink. "I'll ensure you receive the finest education," he said, his voice dropping to a whisper that sent shivers down her spine.

Vanessa opened her mouth to respond when a familiar laugh cut through the cabin. Her head snapped toward the sound, and her blood ran cold. Evelyn Carter stood at the entrance, looking every bit the polished professional in her tailored suit.

'What the hell is she doing here?' Vanessa's nails dug into her palms.

Evelyn followed Victoria Sterling to their newly upgraded seats, courtesy of Phoenix Labs' sudden generosity. "They want us well-rested for the event," Victoria explained, checking her upgraded boarding pass. But Evelyn's brow furrowed. 'Since when does corporate care about two-hour flights? And why upgrade us last minute?' The whole situation reeked of someone's personal agenda.

Suppressing her suspicions, Evelyn followed Victoria into first class - only to lock eyes with her least favorite person. The universe clearly had a cruel sense of humor.

"Disgusting," Vanessa muttered under her breath.

Lucien followed her glare. "Acquaintances of yours?" he asked, one eyebrow arched.

"That woman nearly ruined our essential oil project," Vanessa hissed, leaning closer to whisper in his ear. "She's manipulative and dangerous. You'd do well to keep your distance, Mr. Dubois."

Lucien turned, his face mere inches from Vanessa's. "Why would I look elsewhere," he murmured, placing his hand over hers, "when perfection sits beside me?"

Vanessa froze, torn between pulling away and leaning into his touch. His intense gaze pinned her in place. "Of course," she managed, forcing a smile. "We understand each other perfectly."

Across the aisle, Evelyn observed the intimate exchange with growing unease. Victoria followed her gaze and immediately recognized Vanessa from industry gossip. "Isn't that—"

"Yes," Evelyn cut in, her voice tight. "Exactly who you think it is."
